Rules & Guidelines
Here are the official rules and guidelines for the Bourbon & Butts Cook-Off.
Any amendments will be provided at check-in.
Categories
There is only ONE category for this event... smoked pork butt! Two (2) pork butts will be provided to each team. Any accompaniments, garnishes, or sides must be provided by the individual teams
Supplies
Teams must provide all their own supplies. Downtown Rotary will provide space, trash bags, and the containers for judging. Electricity and water are available nearby, but you will need to supply extension cords, hoses, buckets, etc. Trailers, vehicles, tent coverings, or any other part of the contestants’ equipment MUST NOT EXCEED the boundaries of the assigned cooking space unless approved by the special events coordinator. Holes or dug pits are not permitted. Any equipment or devices that may damage the surface area of the contest site in any way are prohibited.
Preparation
Due to the extensive cooking time required, the pork butt can be cooked prior to the event. The completion of the food in competition shall be within the confines of the cook-off site and during the time limits designated by the promoter.
Entries per Team
Downtown Rotary recognizes that a contestant or team consists of one chief cook and no more than two assistants. Multiple entries by the same team shall not be allowed. Contestants may check into the designated cook-off area beginning at 8:00 am on the day of the event and must have all equipment packed away by 7:00 pm.
Judging Trays
All judging containers shall be clean and free of any markings. Marked containers may be disqualified at the Head Judge’s discretion. Cooks are responsible for ensuring that the containers they receive remain clean.
Judging Trays Contents
Downtown Rotary requires all food to be judged to be placed in the judging tray provided. Judging each entry is based upon appearance, taste, and creativity.
Turn-in Time
The turn-in time for judging is 3:00 pm. A turn-in window of (10) minutes before and after the turn-in time will be recognized. Judging trays received after that time will not be accepted for judging.
Samples
Downtown Rotary recommends that each entrant provide samples for the audience. THIS IS ENCOURAGED FOR THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD!
